Dance Styles

Classical Ballet
At VLDA all age groups are taught in the Cecchetti Method from Pre Primary (Kindergarten) to Advanced 1 and 2 (Pre- professional level). We offer annual examinations at all levels. We offer many performance opportunities for our talented ballet students: the Cecchetti Medal Tests for Cecchetti ballet students aged 9 and up, the Cecchetti Choreographic Competition for our ballet students from the age of 10 and up (where students choreograph and perform their own ballet piece). We prepare our talented senior students (Intermediate and Advanced 1 and 2 students) for the Cecchetti Lucie Saranova Medal competition. All our talented ballet students have the opportunity to dance in one of our Classical eisteddfod groups (subject to audition) and as eisteddfod soloists (subject to selection). Our talented ballet students can audition for a place in the prestigious Cecchetti Scholars Program (at both junior and senior levels) which provide these select groups ballet classes given by Ballet professionals throughout the year. Our annual VLDA dance concert held at Glen Street Theatre in Belrose showcases the considerable talent of our ballet students.
Our ballet classes are taught daily by our talented and highly qualified teaching staff to the recreational student and to those interested in pursuing a career in classical ballet. We are well known on the North Shore and throughout the Sydney region for providing excellent ballet training. We provide it to every VLDA student in a nurturing and positive environment.
Classical Ballet is the most disciplined and technical of dance styles, Classical ballet is a wonderful base for learning all dance styles because of the strength, alignment and co-ordination that is gained from learning it. Strength and flexibility, poise and discipline, artistry and grace are just some of the qualities that can be attained from the correct teaching of this superb dance style.

Ballet & Creative Dance (for boys and girls aged 2 and a half to 5 years old)

At VLDA our talented and qualified teachers offer fun and engaging classes for our youngest students that introduce them to the beauty of ballet and dance and prepare them well for more formal dance training in any style. A love of dance can be fostered at a very early age and that is our aim. Foundational dance technique, artistry, musicality, gross motor skill development, flexibility, balance, co-ordination and above all enjoyment of dance are all taught in these delightful classes. Our annual VLDA dance concert held at Glen Street Theatre in Belrose showcases the dancing of all our Pre-school students.

Contemporary Dance

Today’s current trends and cutting edge developments in Contemporary dance are celebrated at VLDA. There are various established techniques of Contemporary dance (Graham, Cunningham and Limon technique etc) but at VLDA we teach an amalgamation of established techniques and much more. Drawing from what is new in the dance world today, our talented and qualified teachers give our students a ‘voice’ for self-expression through new and exciting Contemporary dance movement that is current and ever evolving. Our students explore the many and varied ways one can move, feel and express through Contemporary dance using collaboration and improvisation skills. Challenging limitations, pushing boundaries and always evolving by its very nature, Contemporary dance at VLDA is exciting and innovative. Students can take part in the annual Cecchetti Choreographic competition to perform their own routines. Talented Contemporary students can be considered for eisteddfod Contemporary and Lyrical solos and VLDA groups. Our annual VLDA dance concert at Glen Street Theatre in Belrose showcases the dancing of all our Contemporary students.

Jazz Dance

Jazz classes at VLDA are fun and upbeat and adhere to strong Jazz technique (Commercial and Cabaret) and performance skill. Our qualified and highly experienced teachers tap in to popular culture and music to provide classes which are cutting edge and very popular. Students can take part in the annual Cecchetti Choreographic competition to perform their own routines. Talented Jazz students can be considered for eisteddfod solos and VLDA groups. Our annual VLDA dance concert at Glen Street Theatre in Belrose showcases the dancing of all out Jazz students.

MUSICAL THEATRE
At VLDA these dance classes have a strong theatrical element and are predominantly Jazz dance classes that incorporate acting, mime, singing and acrobatics. Drawing inspiration from the world of Musical Theatre our talented and qualified teachers create fun classes that have a strong emphasis on group work and choreography. For example, partnering and chorus work may be included and themes and scenes from Musicals may be explored. Students will be challenged to extend themselves in all aspects of this dance style, working on dance technique, acting and singing technique within dance performance. Students can take part in the annual Cecchetti Choreographic competition to perform their own routines. Talented Musical Theatre students can be considered for eisteddfod solos and VLDA groups. Our annual VLDA dance concert at Glen Street Theatre in Belrose showcases the dancing of all our Musical Theatre students.

Tap

Tap dancing classes at VLDA are fun and popular. Students are encouraged to explore and master complex rhythm in their pursuit of dance excellence…’Your feet make the music!’ Tap styles range from the traditional choreography of Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and the Broadway musicals of the 20th century through to the more recent ‘street style’ Tap. At VLDA we teach these and the new Tap ‘N’ Beats syllabus and the Grade syllabi of BAL (Ballet Australasia Limited) Tap. Our talented and highly qualified Tap teacher, Elizabeth Pike, is a current examiner in these syllabi and our students gain much from her expertise and vast experience. Students can take part in the annual Cecchetti Choreographic competition to perform their own routines. Talented Tap students can be considered for Tap eisteddfod solos and VLDA groups. Our annual VLDA dance concert at Glen Street Theatre in Belrose showcases the dancing of all our Tap students.

Hip Hop

The latest in Hip Hop trends are taught at VLDA as Jen Bels, our highly talented and qualified teacher, regularly visits the USA to do Hip Hop dance classes and glean from other dance professionals there. Hip Hop culture has emerged from Black and Latin America culture and has a range of distinctive styles and music. Breaking, locking, popping and krumping are just some of the moves you can enjoy learning in this very energetic and cutting edge dance style. Acrobatics is taught to compliment Hip Hop (for children in year 4 and up) at VLDA. Students (10 years old and up) can take part in the annual Cecchetti Choreographic competition to perform their own routines. Talented Hip Hop students can be considered for Hip Hop eisteddfod solos and VLDA groups. Our annual VLDA dance concert at Glen Street Theatre in Belrose showcases the dancing of all our Hip Hop students.

ADULT BALLET
This class is for adults wishing to start their training in Classical ballet and for adults who have some prior ballet training in any ballet training method. Our Adult ballet classes provide a fun and enjoyable experience of ballet. Foundational ballet technique is taught and well established at the barre and in the centre and sequences are performed to classical ballet music with the encouragement of our talented and highly qualified teachers. We believe it’s never too late to learn!
